HEADING TOWARD THE ABYSS IN SYRIA?
This incident reveals a predictable unintended consequence of the use of U.S. airpower in the Middle East. Civilian casualties before that. Then 59 Tomahawk missiles slamming a Syrian airfield. Now we have endless loops of images showing the U.S. dropping 10-ton, bunker-buster bombs on Afghan Muslims on Muslim "holy soil" -- high-octane fuel for the jihadist recruiting effort. Kill 1 and 5 spring up in his place, like Mickey Mouse hacking the brooms in "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" in "Fantasia." Nuts.
As in "Fantasia," a wise adult is required to re-establish order. Hmmmm.
Why Washington persist in fighting wars -- the entries into which are generally conceded to be mistakes and the outcomes unsatisfactory after 15 years -- remains a state secret. Eisenhower's "Military-Industrial Complex" Farewell Address comes to mind.
Can we give it up as a bad job and redeploy all American military forces back to the States (saving a ton of money, many lives and much anguish), while leaving Muslims to sort themselves out without Western interference? American intrusion into a religious civil war between brother Muslims, underway for the better part of 13 centuries, is, well, nuts.
