The liberal commentariat's continual use of "our democracy" troubles me, given the uncertainty about the antecedent for "our." Since the term tends to be used by liberal commentators communicating with fellow liberals, the possessive determinator implies the antecedent refers to them, and that democracy is a system of government reserved only for enlightened individuals of the liberal persuasion. Sadly, these days there's more truth than poetry in such a notion. (Similar ambiguity emerges when MAGA proponents propose to “take our country back.”) However, the discrimination implied by that elitist liberal perspective only serves to heighten the division within the country, impeding hopes of unity and reconciliation within the electorate. Therefore, I suggest replacing "our democracy" with "American democracy" as the more all-embracing term.
